George Funakoshi Passes Away

Ohio Loses A Judo Pioneer

George Funakoshi, an Ohio Judo pioneer, passed away Sunday, July 29, 2018.  He was Sensei and coach of the Ohio State University Judo Club for many years and was active in developing judo in Ohio, the Midwest and at the national level. 

In the early days, George hosted many of the tournaments, clinics and demonstrations that developed Judo in Ohio.  He ran club events, state championships and the National Collegiate Championships at OSU.  He supported many tournaments as a coach and National Referee, leading his students to much success.  George had held many positions while serving the judo community, including OJI Promotion Board Chairman, OJI Development Director, OJI Standards & Certification Director.  His positive impact on many students and friends will be remembered always.

VISITATION will take place on Thursday, Aug. 2, 2018 (5:00 PM - 7:00 PM) at the Schoedinger Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 1740 Zollinger Road, Columbus, OH 43221.
